The Belgorod State University (BelSU) was founded as one of the first Teacher’s Training Institute by the Russian Ministry of Public Education on September 26, 1876. BelSU faced many transitions from the year 1919 to 1939 in which the Belgorod Teacher’s Training Institute was reorganized as Belgorod Pedagogical Institute (1919) and then again into Belgorod Institute of Public Education (1922). It became Teacher’s Training Institute again in 1939. Due to World War II, the institute shut down from the year 1941 to 1944. As Belgorod was destroyed during the war, the Institute resumed its work in Stary Oskol town.
The foundation of the Belgorod State University was laid in July 1996. The city is known as Belgorod as it was very rich in limestone (White in colour). But the people at the university believed that the color white is also an emblem for cleanliness and freedom and hence the university was named Belgorod. From here began the journey of the Belgorod Medical College. The BelSU was finally declared as the Belgorod State National Research University in 2011.
