Doctors who are successful entrepreneurs

Doctors who are successful entrepreneurs

Doctors who turn entrepreneurs by providing healthcare services to their customers have to maintain an exceptional balance between staying profitable while trying to reduce the cost of healthcare in India. To their credit, many of them have achieved this balance. There has been a surge in the number of doctors who have decided to take the plunge into the field of social entrepreneurship to provide quality Medicare solutions at affordable costs in our country. It is all because of such doctors’ dedication that makes healthcare accessible for one and all.

Below is a list of doctors who have become successful entrepreneurs while managing to make healthcare more economical in our country.

Dr. Devi Shetty

Dr. Shetty has brought long-lasting change in the society, and his work has helped India make unprecedented strides in medical care. After completing his MBBS and Masters in Surgery from the University of Mysore, he  worked as a doctor in England and India for a long time. Dr. Shetty then went on to start Narayana Health in the year 2000 and launched the concept of micro health Insurance in Karnataka which is the cheapest comprehensive health insurance scheme in the world.

He has been credited for making cardiac surgeries and treatment inexpensive in our country by building hospitals that adopt the model of economies of scale. For his achievements, he has been awarded Karnataka Ratna (2001), Ernst & Young – Entrepreneur of the Year (2003), Padma Shri (2004), and Padma Bhushan (2012).

Dr. Sunita Maheshwari and Dr. Arjun Kalyanpur

Dr. Sunita and Dr. Arjun, both US-trained doctors, came back to India in the early 2000s to improve the dismal medical care facilities in this country and bring it at par with what they saw in the United States. However since they were unable to get the work befitting their qualifications and capabilities in the hospitals around them, they ended up working for hospitals and universities overseas by providing them radiology solutions over the internet from their offices in India.

Teleradiology solutions, their medical start-up, studies 3500 radiology scans a day and provides their reports and diagnosis to 150 hospitals around the world. These radiology reports were mainly CAT scans, MRIs, X-Rays, and ECG. These scans would be digitized and sent by the hospitals to Teleradiology solutions for their diagnosis, and they would use these scans to prepare detailed reports for those hospitals They also have other ventures like RxDx, which runs primary care clinics in Bengaluru, and Telerad Tech, which uses artificial intelligence and algorithms to auto-detect Breast cancer.

Dr. Saurav Das

Dr. Saurav Das has brought in a much noticeable change in the way medical care is viewed across the country through his untiring work and dedication to improve the state of rural healthcare in India. A doctor by profession, Saurav Das is the co-founder of NewDigm. NewDigm has done ground breaking work in its endeavour to bring affordable antenatal and postnatal care to rural India through technological advancements and outreach programs. while  also providing healthcare for children under the age of five. At present, NewDigm has tied up with 15 healthcare centres in rural India.

Dr. P Srinivasan

Dr. Srinivasan has done pioneering work in healthcare in this country. He started Jeevan Blood Bank with the sole aim of providing  uncontaminated blood to the needy. Jeevan Blood Bank has been extremely successful over the years in conducting blood donations across Chennai and providing safe blood components to patients on a widespread scale which has brought about nothing short of a medical revolution in this country. It has also been successful in another extremely important endeavour of introducing the concept of blood storage in hospitals in the year 2000. Hospital Blood Storage was widely appreciated as a concept, and due to the successful efforts of Dr.  Srinivasanit was also formulated by the Indian Government as a national policy on 16 December 2001.

Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi

He is a medical professional who has done great work for the healthcare sector in this country by co-innovating 16 medical devices (which includes a low cost portable multi-endoscope recorder).  It provides a solution to the dire need, for indigenous medical device innovation in the healthcare sector in a country like India. An associate ENT consultant at Apollo Hospital, he is also the director of clinical innovations and partnerships at InnAccel Acceleration Services which provides services to start ups to develop innovative medical devices and diagnostics for emerging markets like India.

Dr. BS Ajaikumar

Just like other social entrepreneurs, Dr. Ajaikumar took the cause of delivering high-quality cancer care with the help of the latest cutting edge technology. As he was very passionate about addressing this issue, it led to the formation of HealthCare Global Enterprises Limited (HCG), which is serving the need of cancer patients in our country. HCG’s network of a total of 17 comprehensive cancer care centres across the length and breadth of this country has made advanced cancer care accessible to people from all walks of life.  It has spared them from the trouble of travelling excruciatingly long distances  to undertake significant financial and emotional burdens to seek quality medical care for themselves.

It required a lot of planning and dedication on his part to make his dreams see the light of day. The result of his efforts is that patients are able to access the benefits of cancer centres that can provide all the necessary expertise for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer under one roof.

It is essential now that for a country like India where most of its citizens lack effective universal healthcare, any entrepreneur in the health sector must focus on making their lives better rather than aiming solely to run after profits. Although it certainly does not mean that benefits will remain an elusive goal for these entrepreneurs. As it has been demonstrated in the examples above, being profitable and serving the healthcare needs of our citizens can go hand in hand and if you persevere with your venture, you will see success both in terms of money and the social impact made in the lives of these patients.
