Photography has always been considered a creative art. We have been enraptured for centuries by the breath-taking wonders of nature and the universe. Some of these pictures are so alluring in their beauty and uniqueness that we want to preserve them in our hearts and minds forever. Capturing the magic of these images to create lasting memories out of them has always mesmerized photographers.

The medical profession is known for its stoicism, hard work, and challenges. Doctors clad in white coats are the lifesavers for thousands of people. Their overall mission is treating the sick, diagnosing illnesses, and promoting good health for one and all. A lot of hard work and long hours of grind and stress  are associated with doctors. Despite the daily pressures and busy lifestyle, it remains the most rewarding job on the planet. Even doctors need to unwind after a hard day’s work. The hobbies they take up often act as stress busters. It gives the doctors a way out to get in touch with themselves and rejuvenate their souls before getting back to their routine and a physically and mentally exerting life.

There are various reasons to indulge in photography. Some people take photographs to record memorable events or for record-keeping, some click pictures just to capture the beauty of their surroundings for eternity. Whatever be the reason, photographs refresh memories, capture exciting activities, and can even inspire others. A single well-captured photo can cause a myriad of emotions evoking awe, appreciation, compassion, or even horror, hatred and melancholy.

It would be fascinating to explore what results from the combination of photography with the medical profession.. Is it even possible considering the gravity and seriousness of the services rendered by the doctors? The answer is, YES!

Several doctors have answered this question in the form of their brilliant photography. Photography has provided a creative outlet to their mental genius. These doctors have successfully managed to look beyond the drudgery of their clinics and surgeries and have created lasting memories with their cameras. Let us try to gather information about some of these creative people.

Here are some of the doctors who have given new life to their careers by turning into photographers.

  1. Dr. Zun Lee-: Dr. Xun Lee from Toronto, Canada, is a practicing physician, dedicated to his associated career.

He first got associated with photography in 2009 and has not looked back ever since. He has been doing wonders with his camera. He has now affiliated with The New York Times and the New Yorker as a photojournalist. His two great projects “Father Figure” and “Fade Resistance” have won critical acclaim as well as public accolades for their authenticity, sensitivity, and empathy. He excels mostly at human photography; and his street photography portfolio has won him many awards for depicting scenes from Afro-American families, showing in-depth social connections.

  1. Dr. Max Aguilera Hellweg: Another prominent doctor-turned photographer

He pursued a career in medicine and got his medical degree from Tulane University, New Orleans. He once got a call for an assignment to photograph stem cell research across various centres in Europe. That one call changed his life for ever. He realized that he could pursue his research in a more fulfilling manner by taking up that assignment. He accepted the offer and travelled across several well-known research centres and laboratories across Europe, photographing essential aspects of the research. His creative genius, along with his brilliance in his subject churned out some fantastic work for the New Yorker, the National Geographic Magazine, and the Stanford Medicine. He has won the World Press Photo Award for Science and Technology.

  1. Dr. Srinivasan P. – Dr Srinivasan Periathiruvadi from Tuticorin, Tamilnadu is another name on our list.

This Indian medical genius established the Lister Labs in Chennai and is also the co-founder of Jeevan Blood Bank and Jeevan Stem Cell Bank in Chennai, India. He has been continuing his medical journey alongside his passion for photography. He has been experimenting for the last 25 years in the genre of nature and wildlife photography. He has travelled extensively across Indian and to African wildlife sanctuaries and jungles to satisfy his creative thirst for photography. His favorite destinations are the Masai Mara Wildlife Sanctuary in Kenya and Serengeti.

He has gone on several trips, expeditions, and wildlife safaris and has photographed hundreds of amazing pictures of tigers, panthers, wildebeests, elephants, and zebras in the African jungles.  He has also caught on camera a number of beautiful natural scenes of sunrises, sunsets, beaches, waves, and even mountains.

  1. Dr. Caesar Sengupta– Dr. Caesar Sengupta is an eminent doctor based in Mumbai, India.

He is an MD in  Microbiology and the General Manager of Thyrocare Technologies Ltd. He is a well-known National Geographic educator and an acclaimed wildlife photographer.

Dr. Sengupta has come up with some excellent photography in the wildlife conservation category. Since his childhood, he was passionate about wildlife which later transformed into wildlife photography. He has always managed to take out time from his busy career to spend some quiet moments in the richness of the wilds. He also has traveled extensively and explored the rich biodiversity of India. His love for the camera lens has generated some memorable work. He likes to explore the jungles of North-East India, the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Costa Rican and the Amazon Rain Forests.

  1. Dr. Thomas Rajan- -Dr Rajan is of Indian origin settled in Maines, USA.

He is also known internationally for his passion for wildlife photography. He is the proud winner of the First Prize in Sanctuary Asia’s 16th Sanctuary Wildlife Award in December 2015 in Mumbai, India, for his project titled “Jungle Blur”.

He is also an enthusiastic traveller and a skillful photographer. When not at work at the Pulmonary Critical Care Unit at the Maines Hospital, he spends about 7-10 days on jungle safaris or trips to the jungles. His favorite destination is Ranthambore, India for tiger photo shoots. He has been actively associated with the Maine Camera Club, Maine, USA.

  1. Dr. Kaushik Ghosh- He completed his medical degree from Kolkata University

Dr Kaushik Ghosh from Kolkata is a Graduate Imaging Scientist and the committee member of the Medical Group and the Royal Photographic Society. He is a rare combination of a clinician, photographer, and artist. His photographs throw light on life, as an artist as well as a clinician.

He is primarily based in Kolkata, India and has even a degree in Medical and Scientific Photography. He worked in the Indian Healthcare sector for 7 years and then switched to travel and photojournalism. He is currently associated with several national and international Photography clubs.
