Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the most sought after professional degree. It entails enormous amount of responsibility and influence.  It requires tremendous amount of passion and dedication.  In a densely populated country like India, a medical practitioner can be a huge asset as there is  constant requirement for treatments in various fields.

The undergraduate course is of 5.5 years, unlike other countries, which includes a year of internship. The job is also financially rewarding and starts with a minimum of 5 lakh INR per annum, which can increase manifold after receiving a doctorate or MD. Doctors in India never have to worry about job security because even in the case of the dire recessions, their jobs would always be safe.

  • Background – Located 3km west from the heart of the city of Jorhat in Assam, Jorhat Medical College and hospital is considered to be the best in Assam. The college operates under the State Ministry of health and family affairs. Their motto is “May no one suffer in any way”.
  • History of JMCH – After realizing the inadequacy of well-trained professionals in the medical field in the state of Assam, the government under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh decided to lay the foundation of JMCH on 25th August 2008. The honorable chief minister, Tarun Gogoi later inaugurated the college on 12th October 2009. Dr. Dhrubajyoti Borah was appointed as the founder principal of the medical college, and as a result of his skills and dedication, he was able to steer the college in the direction of success.
  • Unique values of JMCH – The creation of the college and hospital was not only strategic in terms of the opportunities it gave to students in the Jorhat city, but the neighboring districts were also catered to by the commencement of this institute. Its infrastructure was designed and has been regularly updated ever since to facilitate a modern and fully equipped environment for medical students.

Departments

The Jorhat medical college courses have been categorized into pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical. The pre-clinical department consists of subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and biophysics. The paraclinical department has forensic medicine, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and community medicine. The clinical department consists of various specialization such as anesthesiology, dermatology, ENT, general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, psychiatry, pulmonary, radiology, neurosurgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, cardiology, TB and chest.

The pre-clinical subjects are offered for the 1st year, the para clinical for the next 1.5 years, the clinical department subjects are distributed over the last two years and practical in-hospital training is given to students during the 1 year of internship to help them decide their area of interest and expertise in case they wish to pursue MD.

Fee structure

The fee structure is broken down into the following categories:
Government fees (admission, tuition, examination) is 2400INR for both state and AI quota, non-government fees (amenities, students welfare) 15,100 INR for state and AI quota, correspondence fees 3,000 INR for state and 5,000 INR for AI quota respectively, society fees (mandatory opt for 1 society from an array of choices) 500 INR for both state and AI quota students, hostel fees 6,500INR for both quotas. This amounts to a grand total of 27,500 INR per year.

Scholarships are provided to meritorious students who do not have the financial capability to pay the fees. Concession and reimbursement up to a certain percentage are given for those who fit the eligibility criteria pre-decided by the Merit and National Scholarships for brilliant students, which is an initiative by the central government.

Admissions

The Jorhat Medical College admission criteria for applicants have age criteria and academic eligibility as their key metrics. The aspirant should have a minimum age of 17 years at the time of applying or before 31st December of the year in which he/she applies. A minimum aggregate of 50% in PCB in the 10+2 education is required.

The state and central level bodies at the Jorhat Medical College and hospital decide the cutoff, which is posted on their website. After the 1st and 2nd round of the admission process, students who have been qualified are called for counseling. 100% transparency is ensured from their end while disclosing the NEET and state board H.SC cutoffs. Their total intake is up to 165 seats, and the students are enrolled once they are done with the admission formalities.

The following documents are required from the selected candidate for admission into JMCH:-

  • Class 10th admit card (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • Class 12th admit card (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • repeat Caste certificate (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • Permanent residence certificate (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • Admit card of entrance exam (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • Rank and allotment letter of entrance exam (1 original and 2 duplicates)
  • BOND as prescribed in rule 13
  • 2 Passport size photographs
  • Rural quota candidates must submit an additional bond

Life in JMCH

The life of students in Jorhat medical college is a combination of adaptive learning, vigilant, friendly and highly qualified faculty and a top-notch campus with facilities such as a library, auditorium, laboratory, cafeteria, hostel, hospital, computer labs, IT infrastructure, and transport as well.
