Situated in the heart of Ananthapuram city, Government Medical College, popularly known as GMC Anathapuram was founded in the year 2000. It boasts of a vast campus spread across 32 acres. It is considered to be amongst the best government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh. In its first year of inception, a batch of 100 students graduated from here. However, it has grown by many folds since then. The college is headed by its Principal, Dr. KSS Venkateswara Rao, MD (Gen. Med.), Vice Principal, Dr. K Chittinarasamma, MS (Anatomy), and Assistant Director, Mr. E. Loganathan.

History

Starting from the old Head Quarters Hospital, the college has expanded to its current stage over the years.  It was established in 2000 under Dr. N.T.R University of Health Sciences. It was later recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in the year 2007. The college is run by the State Government and specializes in Allopathic medicine. Besides this, the college also has a diploma in paramedical courses and a Govt. BSc Nursing college has also been added to the medical college.

The college is supported strongly by its well trained as well as highly educated faculty members equipped with modern technology. It also has  sufficient number of non-technical staff to assist the faculty as well as the students by providing them an ambience for self-learning. The college works in conjunction with the Govt. Hospital, which helps the students get to experience the over-all working of a hospital as well.

Quality and cultural aspects of Student life

The Government Medical College takes good care of its students. The hostel for boys and girls are separate with resident wardens in each. It also has facilities like laundry services, air conditioning, power backup, spacious reading rooms, recreation hall, dining hall, TV room, and Wi-Fi. The college has an auditorium which is used for various cultural events like college day, fresher’s day, and graduation day. Multiple conferences are held throughout the year. It provides transport facilities for its students. The Physical Education wing of the medical college conducts various sports activities for the students over the year. The students also participate in inter-university sports meets. Apart from these, the college has a cafeteria, gym, tennis court, volleyball court, computer laboratories & Alumni associations. It also has sophisticated lecture halls to encourage learning, and a well-ventilated A/C examination hall.

The college also keeps in mind its students’ mental well-being. There is an anti-ragging squad team, an anti-ragging cell, counseling services, and healthcare services.

The members of the anti-ragging squad and cell are required to go on college campus rounds at least twice a day and interact with the freshers and other junior batch members. They also have to maintain a log of these interactions.

All individual departments are equipped with the required infrastructure such as practice halls, laboratory facilities, lecture galleries, and demonstration rooms.

The college is home to a magnificent central library with all the latest material required to aid a learning culture for the students. It also has an e-learning facility which encourages students to stay in touch with the latest updates in the medical community and improve their scientific medical knowledge.

Admission Procedure

Aspiring students can keep the below mentioned points in mind while seeking admission into the government college:

  • The college accepts applications through national level exams: NEET (for undergraduate courses) and NEET-PG (for postgraduate courses) or state entrance test: Andhra Pradesh NEET.
  • For the undergraduate course, aspirants should be minimum 17 years of age at the time of admission.
  • For the undergraduate courses, aspirants must have cleared the higher secondary (10+2) exam conducted by the central board, state board, or equivalent. For the postgraduate course, aspirants must have a bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBBS).
  • The college does grant scholarships to students to recognize merit and talent. Students will have to apply for the scholarship at the beginning of the year based on the category applicable to them. It should be noted however that the amount of scholarship to be awarded is solely under the discretion of the college administration.
  • Aspirants can keep a government medical college list ready before appearing for the entrance exams and apply accordingly based on their score.
  • Once the exam scores are out, aspirants must register themselves on the online NEET portal and fill in their choice of course and college (GMC, in this case) and lock-in the same.
  • Seat allotments will be published online based on the available vacancies and the decisions made by the aspirants.
  • If the required college has been allotted, aspirants will then have to reject the seat or accept it and continue with the formal admission process.
  • The course fee is in line with the other MBBS course fee in government colleges across the country, around Rs. 46.12 lakhs per annum.
