How to Select the Right Country for Studying MBBS Abroad ?

Medical education in India is extremely expensive, and that is why a lot of aspiring medical students find it difficult to pursue their dreams. Although government colleges are relatively affordable, the admission is highly competitive, and the private colleges charge capitation fees in forms of donation which can be a huge burden on the parents. Studying abroad is a viable option for these students as they can study MBBS at low cost abroad. The cost of MBBS abroad is relatively affordable as compared to pursuing the course in private institutes in India. The students who wish to study MBBS abroad have a lot of things to consider. Some of the universities even offer direct admission in MBBS, depending on the students’ 12th standard marks.

Factors to consider before applying for an MBBS abroad

  1. BUDGET AND COST OF EDUCATION

Financial planning is the most crucial factor to be considered when choosing an international college. Various universities offer the whole course for amounts as low as INR 11 lakh to INR 12 lakh which includes accommodation and food, and there are some institutes in the same country that would cost around INR 30 lakh to INR 50 lakh. The quality of education may be the same in both kinds of university, but the more expensive universities may offer better amenities, and thus they charge more. Depending on their budget, parent’s can choose the right university for their children. Countries like Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, etc have universities that would cost INR 15 lakh for the whole course. Universities in countries like Philippines and Georgia would cost around a minimum 22 lakhs. China has universities that offer education anywhere between 15-30 lakh. After a careful survey of the universities, the parents and students can then decide depending on their budget.

  1. DURATION OF COURSE

Another important factor that parents and students can consider is the tenure of the whole course because many countries have flexible tenures for completing an undergraduate medical degree, as opposed to India where you have to study for a mandatory period of 5 and a half years. To understand this better, given below is the duration for undergraduate courses in the universities of some countries.

Country Duration of course (in years)
MBBS in Philippines 5 to 6

MBBS in Russia

6
MBBS in Ukraine 6
MBBS in China 5 + 1 year internship
MBBS in Kyrgyzstan 5
MBBS in Bangladesh 5
MBBS in Georgia 5 to 6
MBBS in Nepal 5.5

Choosing universities based on duration will not only save time but will also help in reducing the cost of education,

  1. COUNTRY AND LOCATION OF THE INSTITUTE

Although this criterion would not directly affect the quality of education, the campus and scenic beauty and surroundings of a country can be more conducive to learning. Moreover, the proximity of the foreign country to India plays a deciding factor when it comes to choosing the right college. This is one of the reasons why countries like Russia, Philippines and China are emerging as the top choices for studying overseas.

  1. AVAILABILITY OF FLIGHTS/DISTANCE FROM INDIA/TIMING OF FLIGHT

This criterion doesn’t affect the quality of education as well, but it can provide comfort to the parents and students when it comes to travelling. For example if a student is studying in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and his/her parents are from New Delhi, there is a direct flight from New Delhi to Bishkek that only takes 3 hours of travel.

  1. FOOD

Depending on the religion, caste, traditions, etc., students of different backgrounds from India have a specific preference when it comes to food and culture. The parents need to find the universities that offer cuisine keeping in mind their family customs and traditions.

  1. Universities approved by the Medical Council of India and other medical councils

If the students’ wish to study further or practice medicine in India, it is mandatory for them to appear for MCI’s screening test known as “Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE)”. This is a test for students who wish to study abroad in order to get a license to practice in India. Hence for such students it is highly imperative to choose a University that is approved by the MCI. Most of the countries have a licensing examination, so it is also important to check the eligibility of the university’s degree to appear for the medical licensing examination of the country the student wishes to practice medicine in. It is also helpful to check the accreditation of the university, i.e., whether it is approved by medical bodies such as W.H.O or if the university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

  1. SAFETY

A child’s safety is the most important priority of a parent, and hence it is an important criterion to consider while choosing to study overseas. Countries like Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine and the Philippines have an efficient Foreign Students Association that takes necessary steps to ensure a safe environment for foreign students. Representatives of the Global Medical Council frequently visit the universities to ensure that a secure environment is provided for the students.

  1. CLIMATE

Climate is a significant aspect to consider while choosing education in a foreign country because in countries like Russia and Ukraine the temperature is known to drop to as low as -25 degree Celcius. Countries like Philippines, Bangladesh and China have a climate more or less similar to that of India. Most universities also have modern amenities in the hostels and classrooms that regulate the temperature, but it is always helpful to exercise caution while choosing the desired destination to study

  1. Medium of instruction.

A language barrier can be a daunting aspect to students when it comes to studying in countries where English is not spoken often. In such cases they have to learn the local language to be able to live in that country during the duration of the course. They may also have to interact with patients who only speak the native language. It is important to check the language spoken in the country and the medium of instruction in which the course is taught.
