Pursue Medicine at I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy

The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is located in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. It is located to the north of India and is merely a four-hour flight away from its capital city, New Delhi. Although the country’s official languages are Kyrgyz and Russian, the medium of instruction at Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is English to accommodate international students. The currency of Kyrgyzstan, Som, is roughly the same value as the INR. The cost of education is comparable with India, and thus it presents an affordable option for Indian students wishing to pursue medicine.

It is a land where a motley of religions like Russian Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Bahai, and Judaism exists in harmony. It merges the beauty of the Switzerland of Asia with the quality educational experience at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy.

The Academy

The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), also known as the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, was established on 1st September 1939 at Frunze (presently called Bishkek). The first recruitment consisted of 200 students. The first Moscow Medical Institute, Almaty, high medical schools of Saint-Petersburg, Tashkent, and other medical organizations contributed to the establishment of the KSMA. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical institutions in the country for pursuing MBBS in Kyrgyzstan.

The Course – MD (Physician)

The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy offers an MD (Physician) degree to its graduating students. It has a Kyrgyz State Medical Academy Ranking of B+ and offers low-cost medical courses making it convenient for students with financial constraints to pursue it. This degree is equivalent to an MBBS in India and is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI). So, the students graduating from the KSMA will be eligible to appear for the MCI screening test of the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). To secure favorable results, the academy provides MCI Screening Test coaching by Indian teachers. Currently, the KSMA has the highest MCI passing percentage among all the universities in Kyrgyzstan. The duration of the course is five years, with an additional year of practical internship. The courses are taught in English and all clinical hospitals at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy are equipped to train students, particularly in the various types of diagnostics, angiography, thermovision, treatment by hyperbaric oxygenation, laser therapy, endoscopic techniques, and efferent methods of detoxification.

Students, admissions, and achievements

Over 15,000 students are presently enrolled at the KSMA; of these, 20% are international students from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and 23 other countries. There are over 350 Indian students at the KSMA. The teacher-student ratio of 1:15 allows for active student-teacher interaction.

To apply to the academy, you need to submit the 10th and 12th grade mark sheets and certificates, a valid passport, passport-size photographs, Aadhar card, and the results of your NEET qualification. These documents will be screened for eligibility. The minimum score required for students to be eligible is 60% in physics, chemistry, and biology (PCB) at the 12th grade level. Ninety seats are reserved for Indians at the academy.

The faculty of general medicine at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy have been actively involved in anti-stress programs for the rehabilitation of victims. The Academy also achieved the first place at the International Olympiad in Novosibirsk.

Facilities for students

The fee to study at the KSMA includes tuition fee for the entire MBBS course, hostel accommodation throughout the course, food and living costs for the entirety of the course, and other miscellaneous costs (including medical insurance, library fees, resident permit extension, university registration fees, and so on). International students are housed at the students’ hostel located close to the institution. The hostel is well-furnished with single and double rooms at an affordable student-friendly cost. The hostel provides a safe and healthy environment for students to live together, interact, and learn. An Indian mess serving Indian food is also accessible by students at the extra cost of USD 100. Kitchen facilities are provided for students who wish to cook their food. A well-equipped gym is located within the campus. There are various sports grounds within the campus. All the departments of the university are inside or in proximity to the university campus. In the first year, it is highly recommended that students stay within university accommodation. This will help them experience the culture of the university and the diversity of the place.

Conclusion

With recognition from the MCI, the World Health Organization (WHO), Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), and the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), students are eligible to appear for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), PLAT, and NZREX, New Zealand’s clinical registration exam for further studies in USA, UK, and New Zealand. With over 75 years of experience, the government approved I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is undoubtedly one of the best universities for MBBS in Kyrgyzstan.
