Make an informed career choice: Roadmap to career options after pursuing MBBS abroad

In this highly competitive world where everyone is rushing to seek professional education, medicine has become one of the most popular career options across the globe. As we all know, there is no shortcut to success, this holds true in the journey of becoming a doctor, and it begins with gaining an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree.

To begin with, a medicine degree brings with it great respect and is a moment of pride for doctors and their parents. For aspiring doctors procuring an MBBS degree from abroad is no walk in the park. It is a huge responsibility and involves five years of sheer hard work. However, time flies fast, and before you know it, your college days will have come to an end. One major cause of dilemma is ‘What next’? What are the best career options after obtaining an MBBS degree abroad? Which is the best post graduate course after MBBS? Is going for higher studies abroad after MBBS a good option? Even if you opt to pursue higher studies, one of the most common doubts that play in the minds of students and parents is with regards to the courses and career prospects after MBBS abroad.

An MBBS degree offers a vast pool of career opportunities that one can take based on individual interests and life goals. Let’s gain insights into how various career options can transform the lives of doctors and make it successful.

Postgraduate Training (for fresh graduates):

Postgraduate training is one of the best and promising options post an MBBS degree from abroad. The US and the UK are the most favored choices for doctors aspiring for the completion of their residency. The training structure differs from country to country. However, it gives an excellent hands-on experience to MBBS graduates and enhances their knowledge, and the students are given a chance to work side by side and under the guidance of renowned senior doctors.

  1. USMLE: United States Medical Licensing Examination is a 3-step exam that should be passed successfully by the aspirant to be considered eligible for practicing specific disciplines in the US. It offers a bright career to doctors.
  2. PLAB: PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) is the licensure examination for residency in the UK. It is a two-part process, which the aspirant has to undergo before being officially eligible for entering the UK medical system.
  3. AMC (Australian Medical Council): AMC, similar to PLAB, is a 2-part exam to seek a medical residency program in Australia.
  4. FCPS (Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons): If you’re wishing to explore courses abroad after MBBS, FCPS is the way to go. FCPS is offered in countries like India, Pakistan, and the Middle East. FCPS is yet another 2-part exam, wherein part 2 is taken during the end of one’s residency.

Master’s degree

For becoming a specialist, the Master’s degree should be completed in your specialty of liking within Medicine and Surgery. By the time one finishes the MBBS degree, he/she is able to narrow down the areas of specialization that are of interest to them. This requires further intense study in the chosen field for up to 2 years. This is one of the most popular career choices after MBBS.

The processes of postgraduate training and specialist training are similar. The only difference is that in this process, you will be paying the fee, which is opposite of receiving a stipend like in postgraduate training.

This program is available in Singapore, Malaysia, and many other countries.

Diploma in Medicine and Surgery- MRCP/MRCS

Getting a diploma degree after MBBS is not a cakewalk. It demands dedication and is one of the most preferred courses after MBBS abroad in Asia and Middle Eastern countries.

MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) and MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) are diploma courses offered after MBBS. These courses are conducted by the Royal College of Physicians, and Surgeons respectively in the United Kingdom. These courses are also recognized in most of the Middle-Eastern countries, Malaysia, India, and Singapore.

This course has 3 parts: part 1 and 2, and PACES (Practical Assessment of Critical Examination Skills).

Lectureship

You can study abroad after MBBS degree simultaneously and educate people. Opting for a lectureship with Medical Schools alongside pursuing a Master’s degree can be a good career option. Qualified doctors are always in demand, and are often invited back to teach students, and this is an attractive career choice for MBBS graduates.

Master’s in Public Health (MPH)

MPH is a lucrative career option after MBBS for aspiring and accomplished doctors who have a penchant for working on healthcare issues at a policy-level. Excellent background knowledge of the areas related to the medical field would come in handy and give you an upper hand in policy-related tasks.

Clinical Research

If you are inclined towards research & innovation projects, research after MBBS is one of the best career options for you.

Get an affiliation from a renowned and certified research institute like the Indian Council for Medical Research, Center for cellular and molecular biology, WHO projects, alongside conducting researches and working closely with a senior doctor in a project. Who would not like to get hands-on experience in research and knowledge sessions with senior and experienced doctors? This will ultimately give you a fresh perspective in terms of your career.

Masters in Hospitality Management (MHA)

For those looking to move away from the core medicine field, MHA is the best course after MBBS. The MHA aims to prepare MBBS graduates to take over the responsibilities of a hospital administrator. It primarily focuses on conceptual skills to protect the medical profession from unnecessary litigation, quality and risk management, environmental conservation, and emergency management. The course duration is 3 years.

With a long list of career option available after MBBS, aspiring doctors need to choose wisely based on their interests and goals.
