Practicing Medicine Abroad - All You Need to Know

Getting an MBBS from anywhere in the world is a rigorous and exhausting process. Revered to be one of the most prestigious professions in the world, practicing medicine is considered the epitome of societal and human disciplines. Getting an MBBS degree is the first step, and many people aspire to practice medicine abroad after getting their degree. This is especially the case in India, where many students apply for MBBS admission abroad, study there at low cost, get their working internship and certificate, and aim  to work in a foreign country.

There are certain formalities and procedures that one must follow to practice medicine on foreign shores, even when you get your degree from there. In this blog, we take a broad look at how you can practice medicine abroad.

Practicing Medicine in the country from where you acquired your degree

After the completion of your medical study abroad, there are many courses for medical students that they can pursue to increase their knowledge and credibility.  But if you wish to start working, there are certain sets of formalities that must be taken care of from your end for you to be able to practice medicine in the country.

  • You must have a working internship experience of at least 3 months under a certified specialist/hospital/institution on the country’s grounds.
  • In case you don’t want to opt for a working internship, you must complete the residency process of the country. This will allow you to get certified by the licensing board of the country and is a mandatory process for anyone looking to practice medicine in the country for long term.
  • Different countries have different student and work VISA regulations. You must adhere to these regulations and make sure you abide by the special rules for foreigners to practice medicine. Contact the right regulatory bodies like your native country’s Embassy to confirm that you are eligible for getting a work VISA in the country and other relevant information.

Formalities students need to take care of

For students fresh out of their institution after their graduation, it can be a confusing route ahead to start practicing in the same country. Even for students who had the privilege of getting MBBS scholarships abroad, it can be a tough process to understand the details of the requirements of working abroad. Here are the major formalities you must make sure are completed to be eligible for practicing medicine in the country:

  • An updated current resume
  • Professional references from the certified hospital/specialist/institution where you interned.
  • Some countries require additional tests for international students to qualify to obtain a work permit. Find out on the country’s licensing board’s website if there are any tests you need to take post your degree.

Practicing Medicine in a country other than from where you acquired your degree

For graduates, postgraduates, aspiring postgraduates, and already working medical practitioners who wish to work in a different country other than the country from where they took their degree, there are a few additional requirements, which differ from country to country. The general ones are as follows:

  • You must have an active medical license from either your home country, or the country you took your education from.
  • You must clear the medical qualifying exam or the special exam for international practitioner aspirants of the country for being eligible to apply for a work VISA.
  • You must register your VISA application and passport with your native embassy in the country, where a comprehensive background check will take place to deem you eligible to work in the country.

Some countries might have additional requirements, which can be found on their licensing board’s official website.
