Patna Medical College is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia.

This medical institute in Patna is the sixth medical institute established by the British in India which then comprised of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

History

Patna Medical College is one of the pioneers of medical education in India. It was established in 1874 as Temple Medical School with only 30 students and fees of Rs.2 per student for the entire course. Temple Medical College was closed and another institute was inaugurated on 25th February 1925 in its place by the name “Prince of Wales Medical College” which is now known as Patna Medical College.

The institute was founded to commemorate the visit of his Royal Highness Edward Prince of Wales. The necessary funds to build this medical college in Patna were partly donated by the governments of Bihar and Orissa and the rest were raised through public subscriptions.

Patna Medical College has a great history of serving many national freedom fighters and other dignitaries like the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Chandra Shekhar the 8th Prime Minister of India was operated upon and underwent treatment at this hospital.

The legendary ophthalmologist, Dr. Dukhan Ram, was also the honorary surgeon to Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India.

#1 Hostels: The College has 6 hostels for boys which accommodate 346 students and one for girls which accommodates 197 students.

The hostel is fully covered under CCTV and security surveillance. Each room is given on twin sharing basis and has two single beds with a study table and a chair.

#2 Canteen: The canteen is located inside the college campus. Special attention is given to the quality of food.

#3 Lecture theatres: The institute has state- of -the- art lecture theatres equipped with the latest equipment and amenities.

#4 College Library: The library is located on the ground floor of the main administrative building. Currently it subscribes to 120 journals and has 6198 books.

#5 Hospital: Patna Medical College has a 513-bed hospital with 2 operation theatres, 4 surgical wards, and 4 medical wards. Students are offered work in the hospital.

#6 Laboratory: The college has a modern laboratory for students to enhance their learning experience.

#7 Boys Room: The College has facility for boys to rest and retire in a separate room. The room is equipped with chairs, tables, recliners, few beds for students to refresh. This room is also equipped with attached washroom and toilet facility.

#8 Girls Room: The College has great facilities for girl students. For them to rest and have a small nap or a break, the college has provided them with a separate common room  which is equipped with beds, chairs and recliners. The room also has washroom and toilet facility.

#9 Gymnasium: A gym for girls and boys with all the modern amenities and instruments is provided keeping in mind the fitness conscious generation.

#10 Store: The college also has a small departmental store which is used to purchase things for day to day needs.

Admission process and requirements

For admission to undergraduate courses, students have to apply through their NEET UG Medical entrance score.

For admission to postgraduate courses, students have to apply through their NEET PG Medical entrance score.

For undergraduate program: Aspirants must have completed 10+2 or any other equivalent examination conducted by any state recognized board with a minimum 50% in physics, chemistry, biology.

For postgraduate program: Aspirants should possess graduation degree and a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine.
