The Internship Phase of the MBBS Course

The Internship Phase of the MBBS Course

The medical field is quite trendy among students, but it is no cakewalk. It calls for extensive hard work and effort. The medical stream itself requires hands-on practical experience along with theoretical knowledge. Only after getting their practical training, can the students turn into medical professionals.

In India, medical studies are rather elaborate and involve a total duration of five-and-a-half years. The framework of the medical studies includes – 12 months of pre-clinical phase, 18 months of para-clinical phase, 24 months of clinical phase and an internship of 12 months. Hence, the internship period in MBBS from India is of one year.

During the one year of internship, the interns are given significant responsibilities in patient care.  The interns are given full exposure to the practical side of the medical field and during this phase, they are expected to acquire skills from their seniors who supervise them. The internship phase trains the students to become capable of working independently.

It is only after the completion of one year of internship that the students are granted a license by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

What are the Internship options available in MBBS in India?

India has a well-developed medical industry. The country has two sides to it- an established one and the one struck by severe poverty. The medical students, therefore, get the option of interning at medical organizations with state-of-the-art facilities, or the tougher one, – where they work for the betterment of the poor. The latter option is arduous and exacting as not many facilities are available to them.

The option of internship also depends on the medical school from where the students are pursuing their MBBS. The opportunities are usually provided by the college where the students are studying and often, they get placed at hospitals/clinics by the college itself.

During the internship, the students are also paid a stipend, the amount of which depends on the hospital in which they are working

What are the regulations of MBBS internship in India?

The MCI regulates the internship aspect of the MBBS program in India. It has explicitly given out the list of hospitals that are authorized to give training to the students. The MCI has also provided guidelines for the students and the hospitals that specify the objectives that are required to be achieved during the internship phase.

  • Standards of conduct, care, and competence have to be met by the students to ensure safe practices for the public.
  • The hospitals have been given stringent instructions on conducting the internship program appropriately for the students so that they get the relevant exposure to the practical side of the medical field and come out as professionals capable of independent practice.

What are the specific objectives of training?

The medical students have to undergo one-year compulsory training due to the following reasons:

  • The students are trained to diagnose common clinical conditions that are encountered in practice so that they can make timely decisions for referring the case to a higher level.
  • The students are made to learn the safe use of the required drugs, infusions, and blood and its substitutes.
  • They are coached in managing every kind of emergency such as – surgical, pediatric, medical, neonatal, and so on and execute the first level care.
  • The students get to develop skills for examining the National Health Program and Schemes, which are directed toward providing promotive and preventive healthcare services to the society.
  • The students are exposed to an environment that helps them build leadership qualities to work efficiently in the set-up of healthcare organizations and to deliver the best services in the political, cultural, and socio-economic environment.
  • They become adept to providing services to the chronically sick and disabled, both physical and mental ailments. They are also made to develop the skill of effective communication with the patients and the society.
  • The students are also given the opportunity to develop the skills of time management.

What are the duties and responsibilities of interns?

  • The interns should do all the allotted work that is related to medical practice. They should develop the skill of prioritizing work tasks.
  • The interns are provided with 12 leaves annually, with one leave per month.
  • The interns have to take up the shift that they are allotted, be it night or day.
  • The intern should grasp the values of work ethics and professionalism at work.

Work environment

It is the duty of the organization that hires interns to provide them with an environment that encourages them to develop their professional skills. The interns should be given different kinds of work rather than sticking to one routine. The work can be made fun and informative with the use of innovative techniques such as group discussions, presentations, clubs, and so on. The seniors should be helpful to the interns to help them cope with stressful situations.

Conclusion

No profession is complete till the time one begins their practice and learns from their everyday experiences. The internship phase is the most integral part of any student’s medical degree as well as the career. It is during this phase that they get the opportunity to apply all the theoretical knowledge that they have gained in previous years of their training.

The main aim of clinical training is to provide the students with practical exposure so that they become capable enough of working independently. They are made to work under expert doctors for them to learn the handling difficult of severe and complicated situations. The course of internship molds students into capable medical professionals who are prepared for facing any tricky situation that may arise in their career.
